NCBI Seattle
members have many local and international leadership development opportunities throughout the year.
Chapter Meetings
Monthly chapter meetings are opportunities for NCBI Seattle members to develop their individual
leadership skills in a facilitated setting. Led by the Director, chapter meetings focus on
learning new information about oppression; practicing leading parts of the workshop models;
gaining support and suggestions from peer leaders; and participating in the personal growth work
that enables leaders to understand and fight oppressive situations more effectively. Local Constituency Meetings
Constituency meetings provide NCBI Seattle members with support and growth opportunities that are specifically
tailored to the particular needs and interests of people who share a similar culture, background, or
social identity. These meetings are coordinated and facilitated by NCBI Seattle staff or
volunteer members who have demonstrated interest and understanding of the specific issues
relevant to their own identity group.
International Constituency Retreats
Through our connection with NCBI International, NCBI Seattle can offer its members annual
opportunities to
meet with NCBI members from around the world to develop their leadership skills with an emphasis
on how their social identity groups impact their skills and abilities. Each of NCBI International's
seven constituency groups holds its own annual retreat, led by the highly-trained International
Constituency Leader for that group. Currently, the constituency groups include:
Women, Men, LGBTQ
(Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Queer), African
Heritage, Asian Heritage, Latino/a, and Jewish.
International Associates Meeting
Twice a year, NCBI International offers a three-day conference for its NCBI members around
the globe, who convene in Washington, DC to work on furthering their skills as leaders.
Associates Meetings provide opportunities to learn from other NCBI members throughout the
US, Canada, and Europe, as well as to participate in more in-depth personal growth work.
Every other year, the Executive Director of NCBI International comes to Seattle to provide an
advanced leadership development workshop for the entire Seattle chapter. This two-day event is
a time for chapter members to learn information about new international programs and initiatives,
to participate in team-building with the Seattle chapter, and to focus on the personal work
that they need to do to build their own leadership abilities. Chapter Development is also a
time to provide support, assessment, and feedback for the Seattle Director.
Chapter meetings are open to anyone who has a attended a 3-day or 5-day Train the Trainer (TTT), or
to people who have attended the Building Bridges workshop, with permission from the Director.
NCBI Seattle provides regular support group opportunities for six constituency groups:
Women, LGBTQ, Raised Poor and Working
Class, Asian Heritage,
White Allies, and African Heritage. Contact
the individual Constituency Coordinator for more information about their group.
